Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

A large breast (macromastia) can lead to both physical and emotional stress to women. I often see women requesting a breast reduction due to a combination of symptoms like, back pain, postural issues, lack of confidence and mental health problems.

The principles of breast reduction surgery can also be utilised for treating breast cancer (Therapeutic mammoplasty). During therapeutic mammoplasty, I do offer contralateral breast reduction surgery (symmetrising breast reduction). In certain women with large cancers, therapeutic mammoplasty technique enables me to avoid mastectomy

You will have a telephone consultation with one of our experienced patient care coordinators (PCC). The PCC will discuss regarding your concerns, needs and give necessary advice to prepare you for the consultation.

You will meet our excellent pre-operative and anaesthetic team who will be taking care of you on the day of your surgery. After surgery you will be in the post-operative care unit and will have a one-to-one nursing care. You will be staying in the ward overnight to ensure that you recover well in the immediate post-operative period. Once you are comfortable, and our rigorous post-operative discharge requirements are met, you would be allowed to go home with your bystander next day morning

Breast reduction surgery is done normally using an anchor shaped (wise pattern) scar but in selected case I do offer a vertical scar breast reduction. I use a specialist negative pressure dressing post-operatively to reduce fluid accumulation around wound edges and enhance wound healing. I don’t normally use drains after surgery except in very large breast reduction (Gigantomastia). If drains are used, they are normally removed few days after your surgery in the outpatient wound clinic. You will be staying overnight in the hospital and will be discharged home the day after your surgery.

Currently, I offer bilateral breast reduction surgery only in the independent sector. I offer therapeutic mammoplasty and symmetrising breast reduction surgery in both the NHS and independent sector.
