Professional Background
Mr Sundara Rajan undertook his basic medical training at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, India and graduated in 2003. He pursued his dream to become a Surgeon by undertaking core surgical training in Yorkshire and North Wales. He developed an interest in Breast Surgery during his early surgical training and successfully undertook his higher surgical training in the Northwest Deanery.
In his final year of training, through a competitive interview process, he was selected for the prestigious National TIG Oncoplastic Fellowship at Nottingham University Hospital. During his fellowship, he was trained by the pioneers of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in the UK and gained experience in performing various oncoplastic, aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgeries.
On completion of his training in 2020, he worked as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon for nearly 2 years in the Northwest of England. He subsequently relocated with his family to West Midlands in early 2022 to take up the role as an Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. He provides his expertise in the management of breast cancer patients and offer various oncoplastic treatment options for his patients at Queen Elizabeth and Solihull Hospitals. In addition to his clinical commitments, Mr Sundara Rajan is also the Cancer and MDT lead for the Breast services at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

Trainer and Mentorship
Mr Sundara Rajan has a vested interest in education and training. He strongly believes in nurturing and training the next generation of doctors. He has a master’s degree in advanced Surgical Practice from Cardiff University and has also been accredited by Edge Hill University to be a Clinical Supervisor. He is a trained Mentor for medical students and junior doctors at the University of Leeds and the University of Manchester.
He has been an examiner for medical students and regularly sits on the interview panel for Core Surgical Trainees. He has written a book chapter on Pre-pectoral implant-based breast reconstruction and contributed to the e-learning module produced by the National Breast Imaging Academy (NBIA), UK. He is also the course director and organiser of the National Basic Ultrasound Skills course for Breast Surgeons.
Research and Publications
Mr Sundara Rajan recognised the importance of evidence-based medical practice early in his surgical career. He consolidated the basic principles of research through a post-graduate certificate in Health Research from the University of Leeds in 2007. He was also trained in Statistical Design and Analysis of Research from the University of Liverpool in 2010. Subsequently, he successfully completed basic science research in Investigating male breast cancer using transcriptomic and immunohistochemistry from the University of Leeds. This led to the award of Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2016.
He has published extensively and has more than 20 peer-reviewed journal publications dealing with clinical and basic science research as well as gene expression profiling in breast cancer. He is pursuing a national-level grant application for a multi-centre randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of pharmacotherapeutics in preventing post-mastectomy seroma. He is also the lead author for a Cochrane review protocol published under the title of Post-mastectomy radiotherapy for women with early breast cancer and 1 to 3 positive lymph nodes.
